LCM DLO

LI: How to identify multiples of numbers, and find the lowest common multiple of two numbers.

For maths, we were making a DLO about the Lowest Common Multiple (LCM). We made it to help others know what it is and how to find it, as well as helping ourselves revise. The LCM is the smallest number that is a multiple of two or more numbers. For example, if you list the multiples of 3 (3, 6, 9, 12…) and  4 (4, 8, 12, 16…), the lowest common multiple they share is 12. Any numbers you are comparing will always have a lowest common multiple!

Letter to Grandma

LI: To vary our sentence lengths to create pace and impact.

This week for writing, me and my partner wrote a letter to Grandma based off the reading text “The boy in striped pajamas.” Our challenge was to write a short letter with three compound sentences to Grandma in Berlin, while acting as if we were Bruno. We used important sentences, like a simple and a compound sentence to strengthen our writing.

A simple sentence is a short, but powerful idea that is independent (can stand alone), and using it in your writing makes the reader think very sharp and direct.

A compound sentence uses two simple sentences, which is then joined by a bridge or a coordinating conjunction  (FANBOYS – for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) to connect both ideas.

Learning conversation

In our group discussions, we talked about courage during the Holocaust and how uncertainty affected Jewish people. Many lived with a constant fear of the unknown, not knowing what would happen to them or their families.

We also learned that people who hid Jewish families showed great courage by risking their own lives to help others. This shows that courage means doing what is right even when you are afraid.

As a group, we worked well by sharing ideas and listening to each other, which helped us understand the topic better.

Caveman Notes

Last week for inquiry we discussed as a class how to take notes like a caveman. We made caveman notes like Octopus live rainforest, Octopus grab branch, and Octopus hide. After we learnt how to take notes like a caveman, we were then tasked to do a fun DLO with our friends. This DLO was about teaching others to understand and write like a caveman.

Pacific Tree Octopus research

This term, we’ve been learning how to properly research different topics, and our main project was about the Northwest Pacific Tree Octopus. I learned so much about it at first, like how it moves, what it eats, where it lives, and even how to spot them in the trees. One of the biggest research rules we learned was that you should always check at least two different websites to make sure your information is trustworthy. That rule turned out to be super important, because when we dug a bit deeper, we found out the tree octopus is actually a total hoax! It was created just for educational. Honestly, because the website had so much detail and looked so real, we had absolutely no idea it was fake!

Summer Learning journey

LI: To celebrate our success

Last week Friday we held a special assembly in the hall. It was about the summer learning journey, we did over the summer. I was so excited to see  who got what awards. Mrs Grant came to give all the awards, and I was so surprised that one of our most youngest participant (Maxwell), got the certificate for the most summer learning journey activities completed. The next award was given to the people who continued to do the summer learning journey, after school. All their names were put into a hat and Mrs Grant got to pull it, and out of suprise she called out my name.

After claming my award we took pictures of everyone who got a certificate/awards. Not just that but our school won the best award of all. We won the award for the most summer learning journey points out of all the schools that participated.

Up here you can see all the people who got awards/certificates.

Painting the town Mural

LI: To design a mural for our community that connects to my culture

For literacy we were reading a book called “painting the town” this book was about the earthquake that happend at Christchurch on the year 2011. After the devastation and destruction, people created murals ( painting, graffiti ) on walls to cheer up somones day, even if it is going to be temporary. Once we were done reading we had the task to create our own mural. In my mural you can see my culture, where I live, and my religion. I had a great time creating this because It made me think very artistic.

Narrative recording – My first leap

For Literacy me and my partner (Vaha) created a recording of our narrative slideshow. We used Gemini to help us create all the images you see in the slideshow. We really enjoyed recording this, as it was my first ever time recording on Google slides.

Apology Letter – Bok Choy

Dear, Ah Sum

I want to start by expressing my gratitude, and my acknowledgement for your kindness and care to risk your life, for me. Even if I lacked the respect and esteem, furthermore I want to thank you for providing me with a hot cup of tea upon my waking, making me feel really cozy and safe.

“In addition I also want to apologise. I’ve been thinking about what happened, and I’m really sorry I didn’t stand up for you when William was mocking you. Seeing you walk away while I just stood there, and even joined in by commenting on the food, felt wrong.

I didn’t mean what I said about the Chinese cabbages, I think I just got caught up in the moment. I value the way you put others first and I’m sorry for letting you down.”

I also want to acknowledge your thoughtfulness, to carry the memories of your ancestors through the paintings, showing me that they were not just pigments on a canvas but a spiritual love that can never be broken.

“I’ve been thinking about your family in Canton.  I can’t imagine how hard it is to be apart from them. I hope you all get to be together again soon.

Thank you for everything you’ve done for me. I am truly sorry for my shortcomings and for failing you when it mattered. I hope we can move past this.”
Regards, Jacob

LI: To understand we make judgements based on stereotyping, assumptions and prejudices

For Reading  in LS2 me and my group were reading a book called “Bok Choy.” This story was about the Asian migrants, who migrated to NZ, looking for money to send back to their families. There was one asian elder named “Ah Sum” who got persucated and shamed for his old appearance. So for this challendge we had to make an apology letter to Ah Sum while pretending to be one of the boys who were shaming him.
